The deadly problem of distracted driving

Distracted driving is a major problem that threatens the health and safety of every driver in Tennessee. More drivers are using cellphones while behind the wheel, and in-car technology and infotainment systems are prevalent. There is no shortage of things that can take a driver's attention from the task at hand, and it is leading to higher numbers of car accidents.

While most drivers are completely aware of the dangers of driving while distracted, many still participate in this dangerous behavior. While texting and driving is one of the leading types of distracted driving, there are many other things can take a driver's attention. From video messaging to talking to a passenger, anything that causes a driver's mind or eyes to wander is distracting, and therefore, it is dangerous.

A growing and concerning problem

Sadly, distraction can have deadly consequences. Traffic deaths are on the rise, and many of these numbers relate back to distraction. A recent survey from Consumer Reports found that 41 percent of drivers admitted to using their hands to text a message while driving at least once. You may find the following facts both alarming and informative:

  • In 2016, 3,450 people died in accidents that were the result of distracted driving.
  • Fatal accidents caused specifically by drivers using cellphones are increasing.
  • The number of injury-causing accidents related to distracted driving has also increased over the last few years.

Cellphone use behind the wheel is incredibly dangerous, but it is not the only source of distracted driving. Whether a person was inputting an address into a GPS system, adjusting the radio or reading an email, every driver is responsible for his or her actions behind the wheel.

Some people believe that the numbers of distracted driving accidents may not go down until more drivers are using automated vehicles. In the meantime, however, you can fight distracted driving by holding people accountable for their irresponsible behavior behind the wheel.

Enduring the aftermath of distracted driving

Distracted driving can cause accidents that result in serious injuries or even the death of innocent motorists. If you are suffering because of this type of behavior, you do not have to navigate the aftermath by yourself. With help and guidance, you may be able to secure compensation for your pain, suffering and financial losses.

A civil claim cannot undo the damage done in your car accident, but it can help you recover the money you spent and allow you to get the help you need to reach a full recovery from your injuries.
